You may think there’s no difference between booking studio time as a solo artist vs. a band, but there are a few essential differences. While booking studio time for groups can be more costly and logistically complicated, we at Bay Eight Recording Studios Miami are here to guide you through it.

Our Mixing and Mastering services are guaranteed to compete with the biggest names in the industry.

You Need More Space for a Band

You’ll need a bigger studio room for a band than what a solo artist could use. This means the cost of recording goes up. If you play instruments, you need a studio equipped for this type of recording. Electronic recording studios are excellent for electronic based music. If you’re singing or rapping over a track, you have no need for a live room.

What is a Live Room ?

A live room is designed for recording instruments and vocals live. As a band, you must ensure the studio you book is equipped for band recording. This means you’ll want one with a live room.

Stufinder describes it best:

  • Live rooms are often designed with diffusers, absorbers, and bass traps
  • Live rooms often feature specialized microphone placement techniques such as stereo miking and close miking
  • Live rooms are also often equipped with a range of instruments, including drums, guitars, pianos, and other keyboard instruments.

“These instruments are carefully positioned and isolated within the room to minimize unwanted bleed and ensure that each source can be captured cleanly and without interference from other sources. One of the key benefits of a live room is the sense of energy and excitement it can bring to a recording. With musicians playing together in the same space, there is a sense of spontaneity and interaction that can be difficult to capture in a purely digital or synthesized environment.”

Space for Video Recording

You can get good value out of the cost of a live room by taking the opportunity to record some visuals. A live room recording can make a great music video, as an audience gets to observe group dynamics and enjoy the feeling of being “in the room” with you.

As London’s Kore Studios notes, “A live studio recording sits in a sweet spot between performance and production.” Use the studio space in as many ways as possible to get your money’s worth.

Setup Takes Longer

To make the best of your studio time, allow ample time for setup. Consider how long it takes to move, position, plug in, and tune your instruments.

You’ll need to arrive at least 30 minutes before your recording session. However, we recommend closer to 1 hour for drum setup, even if the rest of the band arrives later. There are many Miami studios with excellent band recording setups. Keep in mind that booking a studio with an already great setup (consider room size, microphone quality, instruments the studio can lend) will save you time.

Overall, if you’re part of a band, you’ll likely need to arrive at the studio earlier than a solo artist would. This isn’t free, so it’s important to know how to set up and breakdown your instruments in addition to playing them well. While the studio will help with both, the physical labour portion is on you.

More Equipment

Considering you’ll need a more experienced engineer to balance all of the moving parts of recording a band, you can expect higher engineering rates. You’ll also need more microphones, baffles / isolation booths,  etc.

You Can Split the Cost

Paying for a bigger studio room raises the cost of recording, but you can save money in other ways as a group. For example, if you’re traveling to your recording studio, you can split the cost of a hotel room.

Band studio costs in Miami can get pricey, but being able to divide expenses is a huge advantage of    having coworkers.

You’ll Split Future Income

There are many ways to split income as a band. There is no right or wrong as long as you’re all on the same page. Note that this is not something you work out after your music is released. Ideally, you should discuss this during or even before your recording sessions.

Bands like Coldplay are famous for splitting their earnings evenly. This can be advantageous because everyone can focus on making the best song rather than trying to rack up the most credits.

On the other hand, if only one or two people write and /or produce and the other members are mainly instrumentalists, an even split can lead to some resentment. The first step in coming up with an agreement that works for everyone is to talk.

If you embrace the pros of being in a band and make yourself aware of the complications, it can be even more fun than being a solo artist.
