OUR HISTORY

A LEGACY THAT SPANS OVER TWO DECADES

Bay Eight is a Staple in Miami’s Music Culture & a Worldwide Influence

Of all the recording studios in Miami, only a few, like Bay Eight, have historically impacted the music industry. This iconic recording facility is rich in history and has a record for producing armloads of awards and chart-topping hits.

The Timeline

2000 Early Beginnings

Born around 2000 under Midnight Blue Studios, Bay Eight started as the private creative haven of Grammy-winning Colombian legend Estéfano, a core architect of the Latin‑pop crossover. Its early walls witnessed sessions like Paulina Rubio’s self-titled album, certified 8× platinum, establishing the studio’s status as a powerhouse in the Latin genre

2007 Estéfano’s Legacy

By 2002, Estéfano had sculpted Latin‑pop history with back‑to‑back multi‑platinum projects: Thalía’s double‑platinum LP Thalía, Marc Anthony’s Amar Sin Mentiras, and J.Lo’s Como Ama Una Mujer—all tracked here, turning Midnight Blue into Latin music’s secret weapon.

Estéfano Shaped the Sound of Modern Latin Pop defining the genre’s crossover era with an impressive track record:

2008 Infamous & DVLP Era

In 2008, hip‑hop powerhouse duo Infamous & DVLP took the reins, repurposing the space for beats behind tracks like Tha Carter V. Following a brief ownership change and their 2012 return, the studio became a hub for Lil Wayne, John Legend, Nas, Rick Ross, and other icons

2012 The Split

After a split, four years later in 2012, Infamous would reclaim the facility on his own, this time using the entire space as his personal production studio.

With his extensive list of high-profile clientele credits and accolades, Infamous would use the studio to produce his A-list celebrity comrades.

Lil Wayne and Infamous worked very closely during this era.

2015 The Dawn of Bay Eight

Enter 2015: Audio engineer Matthew “Formatt” DeFreitas acquires the studio, rebrands it as Bay Eight, and swings the doors open to the public. With RIAA‑certified platinum plaques from giants like J Balvin and Offset, slick SSL and Apollo rooms, and a legacy now spanning 20+ years, Bay Eight cements its status at Miami’s creative core.

2021 to Present

In 2021, DeFreitas teamed up with Ross Alexander for their third renovation. The latest updates included a complete restoration and modernization of Studio A, renamed The SSL Room.

History is a driving force in this facility. Ross Alexander possesses the experience to undertake a project like this. He has been the most sought-after designer since the recording studio boom began in Miami, and his expertise is in demand worldwide. He has built and redesigned iconic studios like South Beach Studios and The Seati. Ross understood precisely what the facility needed to remain relevant, yet he stayed true to its Midnight Blue Studio roots. – Matthew DeFreitas
