Whether you put music on the back burner because of family obligations, to pursue a more stable career, or simply because you didn’t believe in yourself, today can be the day you reignite your passion. There are many ways to restart the momentum of your music journey. We’ll dive into recording studio rental, social media, your chances of getting a record deal, etc. Here are the things you can start doing right now that will help you finally make a career out of music.

1. Don’t Assume Your Audience Is Your Own Age Group

Major labels rarely sign artists older than twenty-something. Unfortunately, this has sent many of us the message that it’s too late to pursue a career in music once we pass this age. Your age may feel like a disadvantage if you’re pursuing a career in music, but you can embrace it. Many of these labels have their own motives for wanting to sign younger artists. Artists in their teens are inevitably going to be easier to mold, and are much less likely to ask questions before signing a contract. The fact that there is less visibility of older artists in the mainstream does not mean there isn’t an audience for your music. It also doesn’t mean that your music will only appeal to older people.

Don’t assume your audience is only your age group! It all depends on the type of music you make and who it connects with. This doesn’t mean you have to adjust the way you communicate to your audience or the type of music you make. Don’t worry about trying to be hip. If you’re a songwriter, focusing on subject matter that’s relatable to your life (even if it’s about not being able to find a babysitter). Every song speaks to each listener differently, so writing about subject matter that is specific to your circumstances doesn’t mean it won’t be relatable to people in a different stage in life. Don’t alienate your audience by making assumptions about them. Simply get to know the people who connect with your music and go from there.

2. Embrace the Web

These days, the internet plays a major role in helping artists launch their music careers. While the mainstream music industry is full of gatekeepers, the internet has allowed the general public more control over what entertainers we uplift and endorse. Starting a Youtube channel, a TikTok, etc. can be the key to helping you find your audience. Don’t worry about keeping up with the breakneck speed some younger artists produce content if this is unrealistic for you, but know that it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing thing. There is a place for you on the internet, even if you grew up without it.

3. Go to a Recording Studio

Going to to a recording studio can be a great way to get momentum going if you have a project you’ve been struggling to make time for. While many younger artists are opting for home recording or phone recording these days, the process of stepping up a a home studio can be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t tech savvy. In a recording studio rental, you’ll have an audio engineer to help you with the recording process, as well as the option to work with a producer, session musicians, etc.

Studios can be a great way to network with people who work in music, and you have designated time to work on music without any distractions you may have at home. Recording studio rental costs vary depending on where you live. In this article, we have a breakdown of our costs at Bay Eight Recording Studios. 4. Determine Your Goals

Everyone defines success differently, and this is especially true in the entertainment industry. While the ultimate goal for some is world tours and mega-mansions, others are happy if they’re getting by on income made from music. What is your ultimate goal? Is it to release an album? Do you simply want to feel comfortable performing live? Or do you want a Grammy? Being honest with yourself about what you want, regardless of whether it feels unrealistic, will help you find a path forward. If you’re 60 and your goal is to become a popstar, you may need to be posting on Tik Tok everyday in order to get the large following you’ll need. If you’re a mom who has always wanted to write and record a country album, your most important step may be saving money for recording studio costs.

5. Get Some Help From An Expert

Summary

Despite what some may say, we think being an older musician can be an advantage in today’s industry. Consider the ways your life experience and work experiences can be a source of inspiration. Perhaps the work you’ve done in a more stable career field can help you fund projects with the best producers in your area. Music can be an expensive career field to pursue, and one of the biggest advantages of doing so at an older age is having more financial means to spend towards your passion. Also, consider that there is a thirst for the kind of music you’re going to make because of the underrepresentation of older musicians in the industry.

Overall, there’s more opportunity in the music industry now than arguably any previous time. Rappers like 2 Chainz and Benny the Butcher have come into the industry by releasing their work independently. Their success has led to major labels eventually wanting to work with them in some form. So in many ways, the system is the opposite of the way it used to be. Gone are the days of artists development; you’ve got to build your audience on your own rather than waiting for a record deal to get started. So if major labels are becoming less relevant, why base your determination of whether you’re too old for a music career off of the old rules they made up?
